Arts Integration

“A child who has not pretended, doodled, danced, and hummed will not only have trouble reading and writing, he will have trouble BEING.”

I just found this quote in my textbook on Arts Integration. Call me a nerd, but I find this stuff fascinating. As teachers and future teachers, we cannot ignore the research that supports integrating the arts (dance, visual art, music, literature, drama) into our classrooms. The jobs available now and that will likely be available in 20 years are jobs which cannot be done by robots and computers. Available jobs require creative problem solving, flexibility, critical thinking, self-control, and so many other qualities that the arts foster. Just my thoughts today…at some point I also need to write about holistic and skills-based approaches to teaching reading. Stay tuned for that one. Until then, be creative!
